about the attack? >> both witnesses are telling us it was a brazen armed robbery attempt. it happened in the parking lot of this pop eye's restaurant around 2:20 this afternoon, minutes before school let out and before the terrified eyes of restaurant patrons. >> he walked -- he just walked right up on him and pulled out his gun and shot him. it was like he was trying to rob him but at the same time he was scared. >> reporter: this scared witness said immediately after the armored car officer was gunned down in the parking lot, panicked restaurant patrons tried to flee. >> everyone is panicking, trying to get away. trying to make sure he doesn't shoot one of us. >> reporter: the guard was take on the the greater southeast hospital inside of his own armored car. he was subsequently airlifted to medstar. even as police investigate the robbery, neighbors said violence, especially by armed youth, has become quite common. >> you say you were robbed here yesterday. >> yes, in front of my house. >> reporter: how did it happen? >> dude just walked up and pointed a gun and wanted our money. >>

-together homes in the 8300 block of tillotts loop. kristin fisher is joining us with more. >> the fire is out but the families are feeling the affects of this massive fire. three homes were destroyed t. eight more damaged. and the families that were living inside are being housed by the red cross. started around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. that's this when the fire broke out. neighbors heard a loud bang and saw two houses engulfed in flames an then the flames spread to eight houses total. neighbors said it looked like dominoes falling. the flames were so powerful it carried embers 350-yards away. the plumes of smoke so thick and heavy that many driving to manassas after work thought that a plane had crashed nearby. >> i saw five plumes separate. and i thought, man i hope -- i know the airport is there and everything. we have great security here. >> reporter: incredibly no one was inside the homes when the fire broke out. a few people did go to the hospital for smoke inhalation. but for the most part everyone is fine. sadly several pets, cats and dogs were trapped inside one of the homes. all of

joining us with more. >> reporter: jessica, investigators are on the scene trying to find out the cause of the fire. they know it started on the fifth floor and went up through the stairwell. the fire was so intense that one person jumped out the window. >> there was one resident, who did jump from the interior of the building to escape the fire. >> reporter: that man died a short time later. four others are in critical condition, including a child. eight people were transported to lock a hospitals. 40 others were treated on the scene. >> got my girlfriend out of bed and ran through. she got her and the cat. she's in the hospital and i'm going to see her right now. >> reporter: witnesses say they woke up to the sound of alarms. >> i heard screaming. so i opened up the door and saw on my floor there was furniture in the hallway that was on fire. >> reporter: this man lives on the fifth floor and he says the night before he noticed the furniture in the common area, close to where the fire started. >> it was a lot of smoke, and my hall was pretty lit up with flames. yeah, pretty scary. >>
